(c) 2008, Photo by Maya Guez Just some thoughts about 5/24/08, Saturday morning at Brigadier General William Doyle Cemetery NJ State Memorial Day event: Memorial Day - the Star Spangled Banner is not just a song Each time I sing the Star Spangled Banner & God Bless America at the State of New Jersey's Memorial Day event I am reminded how important it is that we honor the soldiers who are fighting and who have fought for our freedom. Freedom isn't free, unfortunately. There are so many gigs we musicians do to entertain people. . . then I stand in the ladies room and a woman is telling me about her husband who is interred in THIS VERY CEMETERY and how lovely it is that we have all gathered to honor him. I am humbled. No, I am brought to tears and brought to my knees. Doctors mend, nurses nurse and we sing and play. It is a snap back to reality and a reminder that music heals and that those of us who do it should be thankful to be able to give that comfort. I know I am. Please remember that the sign for thank you to a soldier or a veteran is your right hand over your heart. Lisa
